Engines and Driving Experience
There are two versions of the AMG CLA to choose from: CLA 35 and CLA 45 S.
Inside the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is one of the most powerful 4-cylinder petrol engines in mass production.
Because of this, the coupé has an output of 421bhp and 368lb ft, and makes the 0 to 62mph sprint in as little as four seconds. It offers explosive performance from the off with little lag and equally impressive stopping power.
The AMG CLA 35 is powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that develops 306bhp and drives all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Full throttle acceleration delivers 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds and a healthy 295lb ft of torque from 3,000 rpm means that instant overtaking capability is always on tap.
Practicality and Running Costs
The regular versions of the AMG CLA have a 460-litre boot, which is very good for this class of vehicle. The shooting brake (estate), gets a slightly larger 495-litre boot, but the larger tailgate makes accessible much better. Either way, you get five doors and five seats as standard.
Each of the AMG variants are powered by relatively small turbocharged engine, which pays dividends for fuel economy compared to larger cars with bigger engines. As such, you can expect circa 35mpg from the AMG 35 with mixed driving, and around 30 for the more powerful AMG 45 versions.

Interior, Technology, and Safety
Like all CLA and A-Class models, the AMG CLA features the acclaimed MBUX infotainment system with its Siri-like ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice command.
However, you can also control the infotainment by touchscreen, a touchpad on the centre console or touch-sensitive panels on the steering wheel. MBUX can be programmed to user preferences as well as using artificial intelligence to adapt to your needs, or in some cases anticipate them.

As expected with Mercedes-AMG, there is a suite of state-of-the-art tech to provide you with the best infotainment, navigation and driver assistance. The AMG instrument cluster has three different display settings, including Super Sport mode for when you’re seeking a high performance experience.
Is the Mercedes-AMG CLA right for me?
The regular CLA is already a compelling choice if you want a premium vehicle that blends affordability with an elegant appearance. If you are in the market for that type of vehicle, but want class-leading performance thrown into the mix, then the AMG CLA is bound to appeal.
The M135i version of the BMW 1 Series is a good alternative if you want a compact hatchback with blistering performance, but then it is not available as an estate. If it is an estate you want, then the RS version of the Audi A4 Avant is worth consideration.
